my thoughts on Ohman, Selling Culture

I found Ohman's and Adorno's ideas to be very parallell with one another. Ohman just goes into details about manufactures taht are encourageing capitalism and popular cultre. I agree with Ohman when he talks about how manufactures used advertising to control the people and create a sense of what pop culture should be. He starts off by talking about magazines using advertisers in order to make profit rather than sale of the actual magazine itself. I believe this could have been the start of a national level of pop culture. With the increase in abundance and spread of the advertisements come more standards for pop culture. To me it feels like Adorno just goes on a rampage about how culture industry is bad while Ohman supports his ideas with reasonable facts. He talks about how manufacturing companies advertise their products, creating a sense of need for them, and therefore creating a culture industry. A good example that Ohman brings up is how people used to farm for a living. And as soon as the culutre industry labled people as consumers everyone began working at manufactureers and buying objects they used to make at home.

I find everything about Adorno and Ohmans ideas to very reasonable and true. The media has a way of telling people what they need and the people have a tendency to accept it as the truth. They go and surround themselves with what people believe is the norm. Objects like expensive cars, gigantic homes, brand name clothing. And all these ideas are the result of advertising from manufacturers reaping profit off of the people by telling them this is what you need. And the terrifying part is that it seem s as though no matter how hard a person tries, they will always fall victim to the culture industry.
